Occasionally we come across a job that is extremely labor intensive. Since we want the best possible results, we might take a little longer on some projects. Our prices are still competitive, in fact much lower than some we've seen. The photographs here are restored, or at the very least partially restored, to give an indication of the type of work I refer to. For instance, the damage on the yard photo from 1968, was originally as bad as the damage on the fraternity photo just below it. To avoid spending many hours on the project, the photo was cropped and the remainder digitally cleaned. These photos can take anywhere between three and twenty-five hours to restore, depending on the end use.

Mold damaged photo after cleaning, center shows background before cleaning, & fully restored photo

Portrait, heavy water, mold & grime damage, with cracks & bending, peeling, bubbling and strong discoloration. This particular job was a challenge since we were asked to stay within set budget parameters. As the finished photo shows, we were still able to bring vibrancy back to this picture. Paper on board, 5" x 7", year unknown.

In some of our images the extent of damage isn't evident at this size and resolution. For example, in the June 1964 photo, it's almost impossible to tell that the entire surface of the Polaroid was covered in fine white paint speckles that were necessary to remove digitally by hand. The Easter 1954 slide had the same problem, but it was years of grime rather than paint that speckled the surface of the picture. The 1968 images suffered water and mold damage after a fire in an apartment on the floor above, and the color had faded and yellowed as old color snapshots often do. We did full restorations in order to preserve the quality of each individual's features, never evident even when the photos were new. Quick fixes are "okay" and if that's all you want done, that's fine. For us, the photo loses far too much detail and sharpness in features and other areas with this type of repair. As always,  budget limitations are taken into consideration.
