major
Major or severe restoration of photographs requires extensive enhancement and manipulation. In this category we place photos in two or more pieces, with tears, foxing, holes, heavy scratching, pencil, ink or crayon marks, among other things, e.g., moderate soil, filming or mold.
Tintype of Hanson boys, New Brunswick, Canada, circa 1906 Tintype, Hillman Hanson
Portions of these photos may be missing which necessitates the rebuilding of the image. If at all possible, another photo of the individual/individuals would be of great help. Portions of the photo may have lost so much data through fading or other damage that the restoration work requires, in essence, painting a new image or a part of the image. Colorization is placed in this category since it can be considered an enhancement.
Tintype, Elizabeth Delue Grace Hill, circa 1860 CCEwing, 4 years old, c. 1900
Many genealogy photos, tintypes, daguerreotypes, glass plate negatives and other old family photos often fit into this category. These heirlooms are almost always irreplaceable so it's wise to have them archived in the event the unthinkable occurs. In many instances we'd like to see just what damage an image has sustained, and if we're the best choice for a particular job. We've had experience with photos of all sorts, 35 mm slides and negatives, stereo slides (each frame is half a 35 mm frame), tintypes and daguerreotypes and we've also worked on restoration of glass plate negative images. A selection of photos in before and after shots is shown on this page.
