The costume of the "fancy feather dancer" has antecedents on the southern plains in tribes retaining the grass dance bustle. Although the Fancy Dance began about 1920-1922, World war II seems to be the gap between "Old time" and modern costumes in most places. This could be because of wartime cessation of Pow wows and a slow down of costume making, or perhaps because of the lack of men for singing and dancing, or both. The Fancy feather dancer was introduced in 1988. The doll is made of deerskin and dyed red with pipestone dust. He wears a leather loincloth and is adorned with antique brass bells and pheasant feather bustles. He has braided human hair and glass seed bead eyes. pipe stone dust paints his mouth. |
